Policy Governing Tuition Reimbursement and Training of Employees

(Excerpt from TSSB Employee Manual Revised 02-10-2026)

This policy is posted on the Agency’s website in accordance with the requirements of Texas Government Code 656.102(c).

An employee may seek reimbursement of tuition expenses for a training or education program offered by an institution of higher education only if the program course was at an accredited institution of higher education and was successfully completed. The training or education must be related to the duties or prospective duties of the employee. The training or education can include online courses or courses not credited towards a degree if they are offered by an accredited institution of higher education.

The employee must submit the written tuition approval reimbursement request in advance to the Commissioner for prior authorization before the employee enrolls in or registers for the program course. The Agency will not reimburse the employee for any programs that the employee completed before becoming an employee of the Agency. After the Commissioner has approved the request, the program is completed, and a copy of the final grade or certification has been provided to the Commissioner, the employee may then submit the request for reimbursement to Staff Services, which must be validated by receipts.
