Russell Erxleben was indicted Jan. 22 in U.S. District Court in Austin on charges of wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering.

Erxleben is accused of fraudulent practices in the sale of post-World War I reconstruction bonds issued by the German government. The indictment also alleges Erxleben sold interests in a 1903 painting he claimed was the work of Paul Gauguin.

Erxleben, a former All-American kicker for the University of Texas at Austin, was sentenced to federal prison in 2000 for running a $35 million fraudulent foreign currency operation in the 1990s.
